Unlike the other reviewer, I knew this was only a heating element. I got the 36" version and made a jig (pictured) to bend acrylic. When I plugged it in it did "smoke" for a few minutes which seemed like off-gassing of the kevlar wrap. It doesn't get very hot like an exposed element so I had to position it very close to the acrylic and allow a few minutes for the acrylic to soften enough to make a bend. My biggest gripe is that the power cord is made by combining each lead into a plug, but the leads are too short. The 36" long heating element has leads that, when connected, only reach about a foot away from the jig. It's OK, will do the job and I didn't need to buy a variable power supply which is the main cost with the other alternatives.
