Per reviews of other users, I used it as a safety trip valve on a Masterbuilt propane smoker (integrated with a PID controller and needle valve installed on the gas supply line). The heat sensor attaches directly next to the burner (there was a spot for it on my Masterbuilt smoker). In this application, the safety heater valve orifice is removed and discarded as the flow is regulated downstream by the solenoid and needle valve bypass. Works exactly as designed: while adjusting the gas flow, the flame snuffed out and the heater safety valve tripped the gas flow per design. Lightoff is simple- just depress the bypass button long enough for the sensor to register the flame (just like a water heater ;-)If you have a gas smoker, this modification (at least the heater safety valve) is a must. The Mr. Heater safety valve is simple and reliable.
